Please call 303-364-7623 to report an absence.
Students enrolled in the Aurora Public Schools are required to attend classes, unless excused for good reason, in accordance with the Colorado Compulsory Attendance Law. Absences such as illness or injury, or absences approved by the principal and parents are regarded as excused absences.
Daily attendance is the responsibility of students and their parents or guardians. Irregular attendance may result in poor academic performance, lower grades, and an intervention plan developed by the parent/guardian and a site administrator. One of our goals at South is to keep communication open with parents by addressing concerns before they become problems. An immediate concern that has to be addressed is student tardies to school.
It is imperative that students arrive to school and report to class on time. When students are tardy it is detrimental to student achievement. The instructional process is interrupted and valuable instruction time is wasted. In an effort to decrease the number of tardies and clarify issues with parents and students regarding tardies, please review the following tardy policy with your child.
Excused tardies consist of, but are not limited to the following circumstances:
- Doctor’s appointments;
- Orthodontist appointments;
- Extreme family emergency; or
- Extreme inclement weather
Unexcused tardies consist of, but are not limited to the following circumstances:
- Over sleeping of (parent or student)
- Sleeping in due to staying up late to do homework, study for test, etc.
- Missed the bus (school or RTD).
- Alarm didn’t go off
- Missed bus (school or RTD)
- Carpool late
Consequences for unexcused tardy:
- 1 hour tardy after school detention, for every 3 tardies
- Conference with Parent, Dean, Student to develop a tardy plan
Unexcused Absences and Consequences:
- If a student misses more than 35 minutes of class, that student is considered an unexcused absence for that period — not a tardy.
- Additional After School Detentions will be assigned
- Student placed on Attendance Tracker and monitored daily by Dean of Students
Students that receive an After School Detention will be notified 24 hours in advance. This should be ample time to arrange for rides home if he/she is a bus student. We realize that conflicts may arise, which causes the student to miss detention on the assigned day. If there is a conflict, a doctor’s appointment, for example, it is the parent’s/student’s responsibility to let the office know before 1:50 p.m. of that day. The office will call to verify and the student will be allowed to serve the detention the following day. If tardies or absences become chronic, whether they are excused or unexcused, a student and their parents may be referred and placed in the District Community Attendance Review Board Process, otherwise known as C.A.R.B. Initially, the school will document student tardies/absences and parent contact will be made. If this does not improve attendance, parents will be asked to come to school to assist us in developing an attendance remedial plan. If the absences continue after the remedial plan has been developed, the parent and child will be referred to C.A.R.B. This meeting takes place at the administration building and includes the following people: Police Officer from Aurora Police Department, Social Worker, Representative from the Administration Building, and Representatives from South, usually the attendance secretary and an administrator. The outcome of this meeting is usually involvement with the court system, social services, and the police.
Parents or legal guardians are requested to call the attendance line at (303) 364-7623 to record any attendance concerns.
The following information is requested:
- Name of parent or guardian who is calling;
- Student’s name;
- Grade of the student;
- Reason for absence;
- Length of absence if known; and
- Daytime phone number of parent or legal guardian, in case questions about the absence arise.
If the length of absence is not known, daily calls are requested. Calls must be made within 24 hours of the day of absence (by 7:30 a.m. the following morning–at the latest) for the student to be excused.
Please Note: Written notes will not be accepted to excuse students from school.
Early Dismissal/Appointment Requests
If it becomes necessary for a student to be excused from school for any reason before normal school dismissal time, parents are requested to telephone the school to indicate the reason and the time for early dismissal. Requests for appointments during school time should also be telephoned to the attendance line giving the student’s name and the time of release from school. It is the student’s responsibility to pick up the “Out of Building Permit” at the main office on his/her arrival at school. This pass should be shown to the teacher at the correct dismissal time. Before leaving school, the student must sign out in the main office. Please pick up your child at the main office and be prepared to present photo ID.
